OUR VALUES

OUR History

Union Gospel Mission was founded in 1927 when 40 area churches came together seeking to minister to the homeless and hurting on the streets of Portland.

In 1937, Union Gospel Mission purchased a building at 15 NW Third Ave. Seventy years later, in 2007, the Mission expanded to include the LifeChange Center at 3 NW Third Ave. In December 2013, Union Gospel Mission opened the LifeChange Center for Women and Children in Beaverton.

2016 marked the launch of Union Gospel Mission’s Search + Rescue mobile outreach. Search + Rescue was launched in response to the growing number individuals experiencing homelessness living away from the downtown core of the city where most service providers are located.

Today

Union Gospel Mission provides more than 200,000 meals a year to those experiencing homelessness and in need. In addition to meals, the Mission provides food boxes, clothing, hygiene items, showers, referral services and cold weather shelter.

The Search + Rescue van goes to homeless camps in the greater Portland area to provide basics, such as food, coffee, socks and hygiene items. Search + Rescue rekindles hope by providing resources, consistent weekly contact and prayer.

Our goal is to provide the basic life essentials to help people survive life on the streets while giving them the help and resources they need to move out of homelessness into housing and an abundant and healthy life.

LIFECHANGE

Union Gospel Mission is home to LifeChange, a Christ-centered recovery community. Its purpose is to transform lives and break people free from addiction and destructive life patterns.

Men and women in LifeChange receive:

A safe home and community, nutritious meals, addiction healing services, mental health counseling, case management, life skills and job training, and education. Children likewise receive counseling, education and support to heal and grow alongside their mothers in recovery.

UGM also offers transitional housing where residents continue to receive support within a healthy community. The affordable rent allows them to save money while working or attending school in preparation for more independence.
